When French settlers first began moving to the area, it was named for the crucifix that was carved into the rock by an Indian. The city’s development progressed rapidly from there. A year later, the town had a brick house near St. Paul’s Church. In the 1850s, wealthy Detroit residents began building second homes here and building hunting clubs.
